Art curator Pooja Acharya and Jugnee presented Persephone: Paintings by Sheetal Dewan

BXBXB

With dance and music by Terence Lewis & Raghav Singh

Mumbai, August 30, 2015: Pooja Acharya and Jugnee presented ‘Persephone’ a unique installation centered on a series of paintings by artist Sheetal Dewan, unveiled through an electrifying dance performance by ace choreographer Terence Lewis with original scores by Raghav Singh. The event was held at the popular Mumbai nightclub Tryst, with the who’s who of Mumbai society in attendance. A part of the show’s proceeds will go towards the Mazumdar Shaw Medical Foundation (MSMF), a non-profit organization that aims to establish advanced cancer care infrastructure that is accessible to all, promoting translational research with a focus on India and providing philanthropic support to cancer patients.

The installation was based on the legend of Persephone, daughter of Greek God Zeus and his consort Demeter. This one of a kind presentation, blends performing and visual art, and outlines the evolution of woman from being a child with untouched innocence and unfettered dreams to growing into gaining a sense of worldliness, wisdom, of love and discovering her own power and great strength. The event had been curated by Pooja Acharya, a successful art curator who has curated various private collections in India and overseas.

Says artist Sheetal Dewan, “Persephone’s journey is the journey of every woman. It is dramatic, and resonates deeply with audiences, for at its core, it is one of self-discovery. I imagine it in colors, alluring colors, colors that spoke to her in the middle of the night or deep within the conversation of another; the greens enriched her, the blues allowed her to breathe, the yellow made her feel. This passage and evolution is captured on canvas for this installation.”

Pooja who has in the past successfully conceptualized and executed Art for Concern: Concern India Foundation; Mumbai Art Festival: a unique public private partnership that has showcased and promoted upcoming artist along with established artists, says,  “It’s never been done before in India – this coming together of art and dance in this form. We want to provide a platform for presentation of the works by Sheetal Dewan in a way that was truly evocative of the spirit that infuses them. The unique trinity of art, music and dance brings this forth.”

ABOUT POOJA ACHARYA: New York based Pooja Acharya has been curating private collections internationally for the last 15 years. In addition this Mumbai girl has conceptualized and executed events like Art for Concern for the Concern India foundation and Mumbai Art Festival, a unique public private initiative that has showcased and promoted upcoming artists along with established artists.

She lives between Mumbai and New York

ABOUT SHEETAL DEWAN: One can see the universe in her canvas, a medley of natural elements colliding and merging, engaging in a divine dance, to coalesce into images that derive from the depths of consciousness.

A degree in fine art from the College of Art, Delhi, combined with inspiration from her self taught artist mother, to produce an education that has evolved through collections and exhibitions all over the country, into a style that is distinctly her own. A deep interest in psychology and the workings of the unconsciousness led her to pursue a degree in the subject. Every time she now raises her brush to canvas, it is coloured with the depth of the knowledge of the psyche, an understanding of the depths of our natures. Her interest in the occult, in tarot and astrology, adds yet another dimension to her work.

While a strong leitmotif underlines her best works, one also glimpses paradoxes within. Abstract and classical at the same time. Strong, yet lyrical in her use of colors. Ephemeral and simultaneously energetic. This is the work of an artist, which leaves one constantly on the edge. The essence is right upfront, visible. And yet beyond the surface, there is something deeper that tantalizes, and draws one further into the soul of the work. That transcends color, form and canvas and exists purely as the echo of the elements, of the soul.

ABOUT TERENCE LEWIS:  Internationally trained dancer, performer and teacher par excellence, master choreographer, celebrity judge, the guru of Indian contemporary dance- Terence Lewis, is the Artistic Director and Founder of the TL Inc- the Terence Lewis Inc, (since 1999),that stands as one of the countries most reputed Dance Institutions. Terence Lewis is the recipient of several awards and honors and has to his credit and has been the catalyst for several cross cultural projects on international stages. Drawing inspiration from life itself, for Terence ‘art’ is thus limitless and the possibilities endless.

ABOUT JUGNEE: Jugnee, a pioneer initiative, by Terence Lewis, offers a non – profit and neutral platform to dancers for an unparalleled learning experience.  In differing formats, from a 4 day long festival, featuring International Workshops, Dance film Screenings, Panel Discussions by Eminent personalities and Performances along with associations with stalwarts in the cultural arena such as NCPA, Prithvi, Maxmeuller Bhavan, L’Alliance Francaise, British Council, etc. Jugnee grows in strength every year. Jugnee 2015 also had on board Impulstanz- the worlds largest Contemporary Dance Festival, that awarded a free training scholarship in Vienna to the most meritorious participant. Jugnee 2015 was a grand success but it came at a high price – which was borne entirely by Curator- Terence Lewis and supported by his Company- the TLCDC.

Three reasons why Pakistan is afraid of Phantom’s release

11828807_901385329907014_5418563832627240485_n

Phantom, based on the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is adapted from S Hussain Zaidi’s book, Mumbai Avengers. The action-thriller is banned in Pakistan on the plea of the Jama’at-ud-Da’wah chief and notorious terrorist, Hafiz Saeed. The film’s producers, Sajid Nadiadwala and Siddharth Roy Kapur, are shocked that a court in Pakistan has admitted a plea by Saeed, who is reportedly the mastermind behind the 26/11 attacks.
What’s more distressing for director Kabir Khan and lead actors Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif is that the Censor Board of Pakistan hasn’t even seen the film before banning it. The makers feel that Pakistan could be afraid to release this film, that releases in the rest of the world today, because:

  1. The four masterminds behind the 26/11 Mumbai carnage — Hafiz Saeed, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, David Headley and Sajid Mir — allegedly have origins in Pakistan, though the country has been clearly denying their involvement.
  2. The Pakistan connect of these four masterminds could be making the country uncomfortable and hence, it has asked for the ban on Phantom, that shows how the 26/11 terror plot was reportedly hatched by people sitting in their country.

3. The film portrays a solution to the attacks in the form of counter-insurgent operations, like the one that took place recently in Myanmar, which they want to keep away from the eyes of their common man. There are certain vested interests who don’t wish to awaken the innocent people of Pakistan into seeing how they’re being played.

Anushka’s special fan moment!

VBDXSB

Anushka Ranjan is thrilled with the response and the appreciation her work has been getting post the trailer launch of her debut film Wedding Pullav. But as producer duo Anu and Shashi Ranjan’s daughter steps into ‘famedom’ she reveals that all the ‘fame and attention’ she has been getting is yet to sink in! “That feeling hasn’t sunk in completely. Life is the usual or at least I try to take it as normally as I can, though I realize that people tend to stare and look at your face for longer now and I’m trying to getting used to it,” laughs Anushka.

Prod further and the young star shares that while the compliments coming from industry and family are great, the positive feedback coming from the public is equally special. “Recently at the Delhi airport when a co-passenger came up to me and asked me if I was the same actress in Wedding Pullav, I think that was when it kind of sunk in and to be honest I was so thrilled I even texted my sister. So, that was special, my first fan moment,” she smiles.

6 Reasons Why Phantom is a must watch!

11828807_901385329907014_5418563832627240485_n
Phantom has generated immense buzz with the mere release of its trailer. With the Film set to hit theatre this Friday, here is a list of 6 reasons which make this action thriller a must watch!
  • Plot

Phantom is Sajid Nadiadwala’s upcoming action thriller which revolves around global terrorism. The film is an adaptation of S. Hussain Zaidi’s recent novel (with Gabriel Khan), Mumbai Avengers. The espionage drama is based on the series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks in Mumbai which took place on November 26, 2008 ,which continued for the next four days and was led by Ten members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Ajmal Kasab one of the 10 terrorists captured alive was hanged on November 21, 2012. But many of the masterminds got away.

In Hussain’s novel, five years after the attacks, a retired army officer spearheads a covert mission with a team of daredevil agents to seek out and kill these terror masterminds, one by one, making sure that the assassinations look like natural deaths. The best-selling author has collaborated on the screenplay and the terror suspects have found their way into the fictional plot. These include David Headley and Sajid Mir.

  • Kabir Khan

Yes, he has turned out to be one director whose works you just can’t afford to miss. All his films till now have been accepted well by the audiences across the globe. Kabir Khan returns in less than 6 weeks after ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. ‘Phantom’ is one of the much-awaited films of 2015. The controversial plot of the film has already let many wagging tongues do the talking. However, the filmmaker is quite sure that the audience will understand the theme and give much love to this one like they have done earlier. Eager now to watch this one?

  • Visual Spectacle

The film has been shot in Lebanon, Syria, the UK, Canada and India. Indian locations include Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab’s Malerkotla.

Kabir Khan was keen on shooting those scenes across border, but the unit felt that it wouldn’t be safe to do so. Citing everyone’s concerns, he decided to recreate actual locations in Punjab. He recreated Pakistan in Malerkotla in Punjab.

The location Malerkotla was zeroed down because of its mosque, local people, narrow lanes and overall architecture, which creates the verisimilitude of a town from Pakistan. The area was set up with posters and flags etc.

  • Villains

Phantom involves pivotal characters that have been named after David Headley and Sajid Mir and two others modelled on Hafiz Saeed and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.

Hafiz Muhammad Saeed is an internationally designated terrorist and the chief or amir of Jama’at-ud-Da’wah, which operates mainly from Pakistan and has had sanctions placed against it as a terrorist organisation by the United Nations. He is one of the masterminds responsible for 26/11 attacks in India.

Headley, the Pakistani-American LeT terrorist, is currently serving a 35-year-sentence but Sajid Mir, who allegedly was Headley’s handler, has vanished. According to intelligence provided by the Mossad, he is holed up in Muridke near Lahore.

The mastermind of the 26/11 attacks, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, is also supposed to be living in a safe house near Lahore.

  • Action

The film proves that action is in Kabir Khan’s DNA. The films action sequences validate this fact. 4 crucial action sequences had to be shot for tyhe film. Kabir Khan scrutinized and selected Beirut, Punjab, Canada and Kashmir as perfect locations to film the scenes.

Beirut Action Sequence – While shooting in Beirut, director Kabir Khan was aware that shooting in these strife-torn locations would be a sensitive matter.
There were about 400 locals dressed as rebel soldiers and a movement of about 25 trucks and jeeps for the sequence. Being a massive set-up it attracted a lot of attention. They used real guns for this entire action sequence.

Punjab sequence – This sequence had a lot of intensive car chases and crashes scenes, which does required a lot of perfection and at most care while shooting them. They had to go through a lot of permissions including the street shops as there were a lot of movement and security issues during the shot.

Canada Sequence –
As the director Kabir Khan had always maintained that he prefers real locations instead of relying on CGI (computer-generated imagery) because the actual backdrop adds more depth to his story. The entire crew flew down to Canada There they did a high end real car chase sequences. It was an exciting schedule which involved cutting the edge sequence under the expert Action Director Garry who has directed a lot of movies before.

Kashmir Sequence – Phantom was shot in north Kashmir ski resort of Gulmarg and later also shot in the south Kashmir’s Pahalgam hill station. They shot a huge blast sequence in the snows and the most difficult part was of the entire schedule was it was planned in the peak of winters when the entire valley was covered under a 10ft blanket of snow all around.

  • If you’r an Indian

Going by the films tagline which read, “A story you wish was true’ . Phantom is Film made for the Indians by the Indians. As the film is based on a true incident which serves as a nightmare in the minds of all Indian. Phantom is a must watch as our very own Saif Ali Khan as Daniyal Khan will be seen killing the terrorist masterminds leaving everyone wishing for the story to have been true!
