Pooja Chopra’s role in Aiyaary is an ode to all the fearless and gutsy women out there

For years women have fought to find a foothold in places which are dominated by males. Armed forces being one of them it’s only in the recent time that women have been recruited into the ranks that were occupied by men alone.

Pooja Chopra whose next Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary is making a lot of buzz is all set inspire us with a role that breaks stereotypes. The beautiful  actress will be seen playing the role of an army captain leading 4 men for a covert operation.

Pooja Chopra shares, “My character in the film is of Capt Maya Semwal, she is a strong headed army captain and is leading an team of 4 men on a mission. I’m thankful to Neeraj sir that he thought of me for the part. “

While in reality women face a lot of difficulties to achieve a proper space in the Indian force, Pooja through her character wants to reach out to all and urge to live their passion. The strong character played by the actress is an ode to all the strong women who find their foothold in a places dominated by men.

She further adds, “Infact, last year in October, Indian Air force got 3 female pilots Mohana Singh, Bhawana Kanth and Avani Chaturvedi, to fly the supersonic fighter jets. This is for the first time women were appointed to pilot a jet in the air force. It is commendable how women are taking over to protect our country and finding a place for themselves in the armed forces. The film is an ode to women like them.”

Even during the promotions of the film at BSF Jaisalmer, the actress has displayed immense strength while doing the drills designed for Indian Jawans. She did a very difficult rope climbing activity there which she completed with perfection.

We are glad women like her are setting an example for all the women out there!

Hema Malini and author Ram Kamal graces Mithun Chakraborty’s Dance India Dance

On Sunday 28th January, Zee TV will telecast a special episode on “Beyond The Dreamgirl” featuring legendary actress Hema Malini and celebrated author Ram Kamal Mukherjee in their most popular reality show Dance India Dance. Hema and Ram Kamal will be talking about their experience on penning an authorized biography on the life of ‘dreamgirl’ and beyond. This will be the first ever book to get featured in any danced based reality show in Indian television.  This certainly makes Ram Kamal, India’s first biographer to appear as a guest in any reality show.

The 90 minute show will feature Hema Malini getting introduced on her signature song Kisi shayer ki ghazal (Dream Girl) by the young and talented participants from Dance India Dance. “It’s an honour and privilege to share stage with Hemaji, who is an epitome of grace and talent,” said grand master Mithun Chakraborty while welcoming Hema on the show.

In presence of judges and noted choreographers Marzi Pestonji, Mudassar Khan and Mini Pradhan, the book was officially presented by Ram Kamal and Hema Malini. “I need an autographed copy of the book,” said Mithun and quickly managed a marker pen for Hema to get it inked. While the judges marked it as a historical moment in Dance India Dance, stating that Hema Malini is a stalwart, and she is known for her dancing prowess. “A biography on Hemaji is like a grammar book for any dancer or choreographer. I think everyone should read this book to know what it takes to become a star like Hemaji,” said Mudassar Khan. While Marzi jokingly asked Mithun if he could write a book on him too? “Pehele theek se Hindi toh seekh le, fir sochenge!” was Mithun’s prompt and witty reply hinting at his ‘Parsee bawa’ accent.

Hema Malini will be seen enacting the iconic Sholay sequence after almost 40 years. Mithun added, “When the producer mentioned that Hemaji will be coming for the show, we thought of recreating her scene with dhanno from Sholay, which happens to be my favourite scene too.” But there was a small hurdle; Hema was not too sure about the scene because she is recovering from a knee injury and didn’t want to take a chance. It took finally Ram Kamal to convince Hema to ride the ‘tonga’ once again after four decades. “Hemaji is very particular about everything. I know what she would like and what she won’t. I guess that much once should, after writing two books on her,” said Ram Kamal jokingly. But eventually, she enjoyed the entire segment with dhanno and got a standing ovation from the audience for her ‘Basanti’ act. Hema Malini wittily added, “I am extremely fond of two Bangalees, one is Mithun and another is Ram Kamal. How can I say no to them?”

Speaking about Ram Kamal, grand master Mithun said, “I know Ram Kamal since last two decades. He is a terrific writer, and I have already read Beyond The Dreamgirl. I think his fluidity and simplicity are the two aspects that make for an interesting read.” Published by HarperCollins India, Beyond The Dreamgirl has already bagged two prestigious awards in Mumbai and Jaipur.

Executive editor Shantanu Ray Choudhuri said, “Such platforms are very important for a book like this. Hemaji is India’s first female superstar, and people still admire her. She is loved by the mass, and Dance India Dance is the most popular massy reality show since past six years. We are thankful to Zee TV and Mithundafor this gesture.” The show will be simultaneously aired at 183 countries across the globe.

While Hema and Ram Kamal shared many anecdotes from the book, participants paid musical tribute to Hema from her chartbuster Mere Naseeb Mein from Naseeb. Choreographer Mini Pradhan requested Hema to join in a small jig on her song, and she did a jig with the participant. “I don’t know about others, but my dream is definitely fulfilled today, as I got an opportunity to dance with Hemaji,” added Mini.

Author Ram Kamal Mukherjee said, “My relationship with Zee TV started as a producer when I did co-produced a finite series Bin Kuch Kahe for them. I am thankful to Dr Subhash Chandra and entire Essel Vision Production for making this possible for my book. I respect Mithunda, and I have been watching this show for last six seasons. I think this is the right platform to talk about someone like Hemaji, because even today people from various parts of our country idolize her as a dancing star, and I am sure they would like to know about her journey and achievements.”

A specially baked fruit cake was organized by Essel Vision Productions to mark 50 glorious years of Hema Malini in Bollywood. In the show Hema revealed untold stories about Dharmendra, Esha and Ahana, also on why Rekha calls her every year on her (Hema) mother’s birthday, why Esha used to remove nail paints from her toe nails as a kid, why Rajesh Khanna had more female fans than any other actors, what makes Deepika Padukone special from other heroines and why Jaya Bachchan is very close to Esha and why Shah Rukh will always remain special amongst all the Khans.

If you are looking for an unfiltered entertaining weekend, then you can’t miss this episode of Beyond The Dreamgirl with Hema Malini and Ram Kamal.

Chris Hemsworth and his squad’s costumes in ‘12 Strong’ were never washed!

When one makes a movie, accuracy is key to make it look factual, especially when you are adapting real life to reel life. And one film that has made that extra effort and gone that extra mile is 12 Strong. Based on the best-selling book Horse Soldiers, the film talks about the heroism that unfolded a world away in the aftermath of 9/11. To bring the look of these men on mission alive, the cast, including Chris Hemsworth, didn’t wash their uniforms throughout the shoot!

Dan Lester, the head of the Costume Department, engaged in extensive research on the uniforms worn by the Green Berets in 2001. He also revealed how he had an ex-Special Officer in his team, which aided them to dig out in-depth material about Special Force uniforms and how within few weeks of research the entire team, had a depiction of basic uniform for the force.

As the mission in the movie proceeded, the costumes would consistently gather more and more dust and stain which made it look more genuine. “We had an aging department, but in general,” Lester notes“You just never wash the clothes and they work so much better because they’ve actually lived in them. We also had the actors wear their uniforms through boot camp to get them used to the weight of them and get that natural wear.”

Chris Hemsworth’s 12 Strong ropes in the best of the best to be a part of the film!

HS-004041.RAF12 Strong - Poster

Every aspect of the film industry is constantly advancing, allowing movies to tell greater, more realistic stories than ever before. Be its advancement in technology, preparing incessantly to get into character or training with an unusual set of groups for roles – you will see filmmakers go the extra mile to deliver a realistic product to the audience.  One such film is 12 Strong, a story based on true events that unfolded a world away in the aftermath of 9/11. To showcase the most truthful representation, the filmmakers have roped in helicopters, pilots and crews, supplied by the Army’s legendary 160th SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment) Airborne “Night Stalkers.”!

The “Night Stalkers” are experts at flying Special Operations forces into combat and are experts in flying missions ranging from direct action air assault to fast-rope insertion, overwater helocasting, extraction, and special boat support, as well as urban assault.

The powerful Chinook and Black Hawk helicopters were brought on board, kicking up veritable tornados of dust and dirt, providing a dramatic effect for the cameras.

“Realism is extremely important, especially when you are endeavoring to tell a true story,” says director Nicolai Fuglsig.

Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of the film, states, “We were fortunate to work with the Night Stalkers on ‘Black Hawk Down.’ They are the cream of the crop, the very best helicopter pilots in the service. They had just come back from deployment, so we were lucky the timing was right and we were able to get them.”

On flying the MH-47 Chinook for the film, real-life Night Stalker Jeff Gladden says, “The flying scenes that we’re doing here are exactly as they would have been done in Afghanistan. And these are the exact kind of aircraft that flew the men to their mission.”

Kay Kay loved living the character of a cop in Vodka Diaries

Kay Kay Menon is known for his powerful performances, regardless of the length of the role. If the glimpses of his performance in the trailer of ‘Vodka Diaries’ are anything to go by, the actor is all set to make an impact again. Playing ACP Ashwini Dixit, who is investigating a series of murders linked to the Vodka Diaries Club, in snow-clad Manali, the actor made sure he gets into the skin of his character. He called debutant director Kushal Srivastava on several days at around midnight to discuss his scenes and imitated his character’s body language even when he was off camera.

All praises for him, the director says, “I had heard that Kay Kay is a perfectionist, but I was really surprised and happy when I saw him being so involved. He would wear his costume and go around in the police jeep given to him even when he wasn’t shooting. He was always in character and would call me at weird hours to discuss his scenes. He was always open to suggestions and improvisations. Initially, he wasn’t sure about the script, eventually he was all praises for it. We shot the film in just 20 days which he thinks are the best days of his professional life.”

‘Vodka Diaries’, produced by K’Scope Entertainment Pvt.Ltd, Vishalraj Films and Production Pvt.Ltd releases on January 19.

DOWNSIZING Review **1/2

Downsizing

It shatters all the expectations by not showing the miniature world that we had hoped to see. The premise of the film is good but most of the time we see normal sized people with normal surroundings  because we are shown the world of downsized people from their point of view. So the fun of watching five inch tall humans acting is lost and that is sufficient to trample the film.

Downsizing is a satire movie based on the invention by scientists that makes humans five inch tall so that the world would be a better place by reducing the waste and cutting down the needs which will  help in countering the problem of overpopulation. The protagonist Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) chooses to go for this irreversible process but as soon as he recovers, he finds that his wife Audrey Safranek (Kristen Wiig) has left him as she got scared during the downsizing process and fled back to her  normal world. Paul is left all alone in the Leisureland, the posh community for the tiny people where he makes few friends and even dates one single woman. He is in dilemma regarding his decision as he had expected a pleasant life with his wife in miniature size. He meets a Vietnamese housecleaner Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chau) and goes with her to treat her dying friend as he is occupational therapist. Over the course of time, the two fall in love until Paul makes a decision to go into a vault made for the miniature sized community inside the mountain that is supposed to save the human race because the methane emissions from the Arctic Circle is supposed to extinct humans on the earth. Ngoc and Paul’s friends chose not to go inside as they believe that they are better in the normal world but Paul goes but his conscience puts him in dilemma and he decides to return back to Ngoc and his friends.

The satire has been presented in an emotional way but it fails to entertain or move us enough emotionally. Matt Damon has tried his best and Hong Chau has given a brilliant performance in the role of a Vietnamese immigrant with her ungrammatical English with a funny accent. The concept of downsizing itself looks far away because there are so many basic problems that our medical professionals haven’t been able to solve and making a person five-inch tall seems overly exaggerated.  Dealing with overpopulation by downsizing may have excited the makers of the movie but it is an effort that lends acclamation to the mentality of the so called western world psychos who are in a bid to get rid of few billion people by life threatening viruses and other methods. Downsizing is a down movie that has been downed by its weight of boring stuff that it consists of.
